Whyalla helped build Australia through migration, mining, engineering and steelmaking; and was once worth nearly half of South Australia’s GDP. It could soon be worth far more, as it prepares to lead the nation’s green industry revolution and climate change adaptation, spear-headed by major South Australian and Federal Government projects and funding. These include nearly the $2b Sovereign Steel Package, helping upgrade the steelworks for a long-term green steel and iron future.
To help attract and cater for the increased workforce required for these projects, we have already implemented a number of improvements, including a nearly $45m airport facility and runway upgrade; construction of a brand-new, state-of-the-art $100m Whyalla Secondary College; and improved our lifestyle attraction with a $9m circular jetty – the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
There is still more to come, including a staged $15m family-friendly foreshore redevelopment - incorporating Federal and State Government funding contributing to a new Whyalla Foreshore Centre building and splash-and-play plaza facility.
